This is a bench made for a dinner table. It is solid hickory.

The legs are three 1X’s laminated together. This was my first time making tapered legs, and it ended up being more difficult than I thought. I thought I would be able to jig something up for the table saw to make the tapers, but then I realized I would have to extend my table and slide. That is a project I willl have to see about in the future. In the meantime, I was able to get the legs uniformly tapered using my bandsaw.

The local lumber store didn’t carry 1X12’s in hickory, so I used biscuits to join two 1X6’s for the bench seat. The bread board ends are doweled and glued. I sanded all the visible surfaces down to 220 grit. I’m very happy with the way it turned out. It easily holds the weight of my two kids (pictured) and I.

Thanks, Jack. The pictures show the bench unfinished. The guy I made it for plans on finishing it himself. I just hope he doesn’t paint it. It was my first time working with hickory, and it is a beautiful wood. I loved the smell of it.
