Fifth project - Night table

This is a night table I built for my wife.
We had found a strange old night table on a flea market which looked like it started its life as another piece of furniture.
Obviously night tables go by pair so I decided to build a mate to the first one.
My wife wanted drawers instead of a single door.
The wood is walnut and the structure is rather peculiar as I had to match the features of the existing one.

This is so far the project I am the most proud of.
You can see it in the pictures at different building stages and compared to the antique night table.

Allright, you’re should not be allowed to lable your projects first, second, third. Most of us, on our second project are building a miter box. Just kidding. This is some incredible work. Well done.

Very impressive. Now all you need are some bug holes to match the antique ;p
Welcome to LJs :)

Thank you, I am confident that the bugs will find their way to this furniture without me having to point out the path to them.

(Bought a “buffet” 2 years ago and after liters and liters of insecticide, I still have bugs coming out of it every May.. this year they are less of them though, so hopefully I about to see the end of the plague)

I have to agree with getlostinwood about numbering the projects because I’m still building jigs rather than actual projects. :-)

You did an excellent job in not only duplicating the shape and style, but also the finish. I had to do a double-take to see which one was the original.

Paulo, Getlostinwood, when I number my projects I consider only “real” projects, not jigs, book ends, bread boards or other small toys done in a weekend. To me, a project is something that spans over a few months.

Really nice carving (all five). Everything else is great too, but the carving is the show stealer. Great craftsmanship.

Welcome, you’ll fit right in here.

You’re right, the original design is a bit peculiar. Looks as though the top is slightly out of proportion compared to the case/base. You did a great job replicating it however and your carving almost seems “too detailed.” Outstanding job!
