Tool Cabinet

Project by Kerry posted 665 days ago 1134 views 14 times favorited 21 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I just completed this tool cabinet, well nearly, I still need to add catches and a couple of pulls. I had to do some reorganizing to get planes and other items off the bench/counter before one fell.

There’s enough room behind the doors when the doors are open to put some more tools on the walls. I still have a few things to add inside the cabinet, chisels, spokeshaves and I left a little room for expansion. Someday I’ll have a #8 for the right hand side, and I have my Grandfather’s #6 still to clean up. Trying to organize everything was quite a challenge, but kind of fun too.

I used box joints for the corners of the carcase – not sure I’d do that again. They’re strong but don’t look so nice. I hung it on the wall using French cleats, but then chickened out and put a few screws through into studs – I REALLY don’t want to wake up tonight to a loud crash!

By the way, here is what it’s replacing:

and here it is closed:

Anyway, thanks for having a look,
Kerry

Very nice. Tool storage was the last thing I did.. except my new storage method looks a bit like your old one :P

Nice set-up. I like the addition of the extra panel on the right…

How do you like that new LV plow plane?

Tidied things up very nicely. That is a nice collection inside the box, too.

I like the cabinet. You did a really nice job on it. I think that it is a universal truth that all shops are short of storage space. Your cabinet does a lot to alleviate this in your shop. I like the way you finished it out too. It adds a sense of furniture quality to the piece.

Great job.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice project for a tight space Kerry.
Looks like you took advantage of the Lee Valley special on piano hinges too!

Very nice project. It really makes the place look neat. Did you say that you were going to use the space on each side also. It looks like the doors are hinged so as to allow for that. Cool design.

Thanks folks.

Yes Mario, I’m going to hang some saws and other tools on the walls to the sides. There’s about 4” of space left with the doors open.

Dorje – sorry I missed your question the 1st time. I rec’d the plow plane for Christmas haven’t had an opportunity to try it out on a project yet. I played with it a little on some mahogany and it sure was simple and quick to make a nice neat groove. I’m going to start a box soon and I’ll give it a better test run then and let you know.

Very nice. This thread was started almost 2 years ago. How is the cabinet holding up? What are its dimensions?

Thanks. It’s holding up fine. The centre cabinet is 34” wide, 30” tall. With the doors closed it projects 12” from the wall (the centre portion is 8” deep). I like most parts about it, but someday I’ll probably find a different way to hold the saws. The magnetic strip works ok, but every once in a while I bump a saw and it falls. So far no damage, luckily.

Cheers,
Kerry
