First attempt at picture frames

These is my first attempt at picture frames. After spending ages trying to get a mitered picture frame to come up square I eventually gave up and just went with this design. The joins are just butted straight together and glued with V nails in the back for a bit more strength. Next frame I make I’ll try some actual joinery I think.

These were a gift for my wife, she liked the natural look of the timber, so I’ve left it unfinished.

Looks good forkboy. A little clue with mitres that might work for you is when you get them pretty close clamp them together or almost touching and run a saw blade through the joint. This cuts both sides of the joint. Keep repeating that until you have a perfect mitre.

good stuff, as a finish danish oil could possibly be nice on your next project.

-- I cut it twice & it was still too short

With a great subject (in the photo) you could have glued up some egg cartons and got great results. Your frames are rustic looking, which is also a look – so say that you “meant to do that” :-)) Very cute child.

Ditto Cajun’s comment. Good tip from Grumpy, too.

This is a nice job. It gives the frame a distinctive and original look.

If your wife is happy with the project enough said. Cajunpen’s signature speaks volumes with respect to this.

Thanks for sharing.

Some subjects render the frame unimportant. :-)

Great picture frame, love the picture, too!

A tip on mitered joints that my uncle taught me – he’s a master carpenter and cabinetmaker… put a pencil under the board as you cut it on the miter saw, just to the left of the blade path, this puts a very slight bevel on the cut and helps to seal the joint.

I like what Charlie said! The subject, not the frame is the most important! The simple butt joints look good on frames, too. I like the way the grain compliments the frame.
GOOD JOB!

God Bless,
