My first “real” box and my first project posted to Lumberjocks. Made this last year for my oldest daughter to commemorate her graduation from Navy boot camp. Materials are Big Orange Box red oak and redwood. The redwood started life as a rather wet fence board. I cut it to rough dimensions and took a skim cut on both sides using a router surfacing jig. After a couple of weeks in my 90+ degree, zero humidity garage it was much drier and had a nice bow to it. Another session on the surfacing jig and it was flat and ready to go. I used the redwood to remind her that wherever her Navy career takes her she’ll always be a California girl (ironically enough she’s currently stationed in San Diego). Lining is a blue felt; stop hinges are from Brusso. Finish is Watco Danish Oil (Natural).

What a fitting way to thank her for her service. The Oak and Redwood work well together. Well done.

Great looking box, I love the color of the felt and how it looks against the wood. A very nice keepsake.

Your first box?? What the crap, man!?? It’s one heck of a “first” box! Wow, you’re gonna go places.

Thanks everyone.

@Richard; if I remember right I ordered the medallion from https://store.nwtmint.com/product_details/2284/U.S._Navy_Adhesive_Medallion_3/. If you google “adhesive us navy medallion” you’ll find a few styles.

@thejosh; it’s funny; I see other people post projects here that they describe as their first woodworkng project and I always say the same thing you just did about mine. I think we all tend to appreciate other people’s work more than our own.

JWF , Thanks I checked it out and they have a good selection. Just not any of the ships I served on since they are all scraped now. Must have been a long time ago I was on them. :)

Have your say...
