This is a 5 drawer chest-of-drawer I built for a customer. It broke my heart when she told me she wanted the red oak I’d worked so hard on painted black! I knew I couldn’t bring myself to completely cover the beautiful oak grain, so I thinned the paint half and half. This worked just as I’d hoped, allowing the grain to show through the paint, giving it a stained look. This was also my first go at using my new porter-cable dovetail jig. The jig sure makes life easier in the dovetail department. almost felt like I was cheating. The case is red oak and the drawers are poplar, and I finished the black off with a couple coats of satin poly. Hope you like!

I just used gloss rustoleum black paint. Thinned it half/half with mineral spirits. I tried ebony stain on some scraps and learned that red oak will absolutely not turn black. After a few other trial and errors I turned to paint. It worked well. I applied it with a rag just like stain, which gave it a distressed look. I was very reluctant to put paint on this thing, but I was very pleased with the outcome.

Very cool. I will have to keep this in mind when I build my brother’s picture frames. He wants an ebonized look. Just like what u have done. I may try and go this route instead of stain. Thanks a lot!
