I built these cribs following plans in a Wood Magazine issue (not sure of #). Started the first crib before we even got pregnant, which was a good thing because it took me nearly a year and a half to complete. Just as I finished the first crib we found out we were having twins, so I got to build a second one (luckily I got a little faster on the second one and finished it in 8 months).
Cribs are made of hard maple and maple plywood. Finish schedule: 1.) one coat BLO 2.) sprayed on dye stain with denatured alcohol 3.) finished with three coats of varnish.
Very happy with how these turned out. These were my first woodworking project, and when I started I had to actually look up the meaning of ”...joint and plane…” to figure out what the plans were talking about. I’ve certainly enjoyed the journey, and my girls have really enjoyed their cribs and hopefully will in years to come (I made the matching toddler rail and full sized bed rails).

Nice looking cribs, they say the secong time is easier but I don’t know that it applies to babies … just woodworking projects.

Beautiful! I am half way done with the same crib for the second of our twins who arrived on 4/20. I also didn’t know we were having 2 when I said “i’ll make the crib”. Guess they will sleep together in crib #1 for a while. At least they get to sleep (they don’t like to let us). Also, the babies are beautiful!

Firefighter,
We also had our girls sleep in the same crib for the first 5 months while I got a chance to finish the second crib. Thanks for looking, and congratulations on the birth of your twins, I can tell you from experience, its more than twice the work, but exponentially more fun!

What a wonderful post! Beautiful cribs and girls. And who would have thought so many l/js would have built the same crib(s) for their TWINS? Amazing. :)

You guys are braver than I! My wife and I are about 6-8ish weeks from having twins…our first and second. I briefly thought about making cribs but only briefly! :) I’ve got a few smaller projects in the works to put my LJ touch on the nursery.
These are excellent cribs! What special heirloom pieces…built by Dad!
Take care.
