Made this little pistol case for a buddy, sort of a “thank you” gift. He has this little Seecamp .380 pistol, one of those credit card-sized deals. I decided to use some exotic woods for trim, inlays, etc. Turned out beautiful! Also turns out, the guy has TWO .380s, sequential serial nums. One for him, one for his dad. He decided to order a second, identical case. Only problem is, the veneer I used on the top of the lid? The darker stuff? I have no idea what the hell it is! I got it out of a pack of 25 or so exotic (and unlabled) veneers, and of course it was the only one in the pack. I bought said pack at the Woodcraft store down the street, figured I could just go get another pack. Guy at the store says the contents of those random veneer packs are just that. Random. Anyone have any ideas??? Would appreciate any input!! Thanks, Jim

Nice looking box. My guess is African mahogany.

That is one well made box. I would also guess African Mahogany. The Burl inlay is a nice touch.

I do appreciate the compliments guys! Pretty sure it’s not African Mahogany though. I sat down at the store with a wood identification book, and I did see the Afr. Mah., but the closest I could find was a Lyptus. I used a basic Minwax “natural” stain on it, so it did darken the color a bit. The veneer itself, when raw, has a sort of wavy, rippled look to it. The waves have almost a shiny look about them. I have a piece of scrap, may post that. See if it helps any! Thanks again, Jim

Nice locking guncase! I want to know where you bought the key and lock for it? I am making pirate chest jewelry boxes and guncases. I would love to use your lock and key setup. For that matter I would like to use the same hinges too! Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Great looking box and accessories. I would like to see the pistols too! Probably still with said buddy! Thanks for posting, good luck with the wood ID

Could it be Sapele?
