This past Sunday, Palm (or Passion) Sunday, I had the pleasure of becoming a Godfather for the fourth time. All to beautiful girls. I decided to kick off the 2011 shop season with what I had hoped would be a very special gift for a special little girl.

This cross measures approximately 20”L x 14”W, I say approximately because I didn’t bother taking measurements. I started cutting and let the good Lord guide my hands. The wood used is Cherry, Maple and Purpleheart. Each ‘layer’ extends proud of the prior by about 1/8” or so.

Very simple construction. Ran a dado lengthwise on a piece of cherry and added the strip of purpleheart and flanked it with maple on either side. Cut the single ‘stick’ into four pieces, trimmed back the cherry and maple to emphasis the 3D effect on each end and finished by clipping and sanding to a 45. No mechanical fasteners used.. just some TB3 wood glue and an over-night stay in a clamping jig I threw together.

Thanks for looking!

Great design on the cross, and what a happy smile on you both!
