Japanese Smoothing Plane

This is another one of the wooden planes I’ve made. Its a 12” Japanese style smoothing plane with a 45 degree bed angle and 2” wide blade. The body is made of maple and the wedge is cherry. Like traditional japanese planes I relieved the sole behind the blade and the area between the blade and front. I’ve never used a pull style plane and it felt akward at first but I find the motion comfortable and enjoyable. I’ve gotten the best results from this plane so far out of the 2 other smoothers I’ve made like the one posted here http://lumberjocks.com/projects/47165

Looks like it works great. What did you use for the blade?

Its a Hock blade from LeeValley. Great blades for if you want to make your own planes. I would eventually like to make my own blades so I can have a greater range of options. The Hock blades sold at LeeValley come in 4 sizes 2”, 1 3/4”, 1 1/2” and a 1 1/2” blade with a large camber already ground in.

The book by David Finck, it’s a good book huh? Does it show how to make planes from start to finish?

Thanks. I was wondering if you had a japanese blade in it or something similar. I have a couple of those blades waiting to go.

The book by David Fink is well done and he shows how to make a wooden plane from the log to the finished tool. Check out this video by David to get an idea of what his planes are about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dag4qNRdRRo

This plane was made in the same way I made my other “western/krenov” style smoother I just lowered the cross pin to accomodate the slim body. So its not at all a traditional style japanese kanna and it does not have a japanese blade.

Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! I watched Mr. Fink’s video and will be purchasing his book as soon as money allows.

Very impressive. I love my eastern saws and have wanted to try this style plane.

Nice looking plane.

I spare no chance to recommend David Finks book, and his blades they are in my opinion the best you can get.

Nice man! Soon as things slows down in my shop, I’m on a Jap style plane. The timber has been milled and is waiting for me…As for blades, I don’t have the option of Hock and Lee valley and all the choices you lucky devils have…I must come up with other solutions….

I’m glad some of you caught the wooden plane bug also. And sorry but I spelt David Finck’s name wrong in the above comments.

Another point about David’s book. The description of how to set up a block plane is outstanding.
