A Bowl from a 2 x 4! A Bowl from a 2 x 4! A Bowl from a 2 x 4! Click the pictures to enlarge them

I blogged the background story to this project. This is my submission for the Winter 2×4 Challenge. This is a Bowl from a 2×4. This method of construction is a staple of the salad bowl industry. If you google bowl from a board, you can take a look at a few other methods of contsruction!

Well, Mr. 2×4, thanks for giving me a great 4 nights in the shop, some anxiety, a great challenge, and a neat project from some wood that was bound for the dump!

Thanks for looking!

I still have my 2×4 and no idea of what I want to do. Maybe I’ll make a box of toothpicks! Nice bowl Tom! Like your photography as well.

Oh yes, yes, yes! A great outcome, Mot. And not a right angle or straight line to be seen – it’s along way from its origins. Marvellous. Helpful blog too.

Posting after reading blog-

Hey Pisano…....I’ll take a slide. Alot of good thinking in that bowl Mot….Love it!!!!

Even some truely excellent words of woodworking widom: “I’ll workout how to correct the error later. I was still thinking at this point.”

Super work Tom…............a little potpourri and your bowl would set nice on Bob#2’s, 2×4 shelf.

There’s good stuff coming out of the 2×4’s.

Ha Ha very clever, just a little “outside the board” thinking here. Change of typical segmented wood for a bowl and voila, a beautiful bowl. I love it. Great job.

Mot,

Very creative. You have two photos: one with fruit and the second – are those noodles?

The 2×4 competition was intended to get LJs creative juices flowing. You have done it.

Thanks for the comments, folks! This was a fun project and had tons of motivation and inspiration from the LJ community.

Hey dalec, those are the shavings off the lathe. I was scooping them up to throw away but tossed them into the bowl for a picture first.

Cheers!

Doesn’t look anything like a 2×4, nice transformation. Your imagination and skill along with the Nova make a great team. Wood shaving salad, mmmmm my favorite.

Tom -

Absolutely cool!

Great entry and a lot of fun with the teasers in your blog. I like how you left it natural.

BTW, great photography.

Very Nice, great craftsmanship.

You can’t put a square peg in a round hole, but you can make a round hole out of a 2×4 !!

I still stand by my comment that this turning will be a front-runner. Just saw the birdcage 2X4 posted. Stiff competition. and here I thought I could use my vast creative design knowledge to win. Creating a 1X8 from the 2X4 isn’t as awesome as I had thouht!
