I have a friend who builds and plays guitars and lives in Nova Scotia , he ask me to create him a pick box. This is what I came up with. It`s made from 4 different kinds of exotic woods with a cow bone insert. I tried my hand at skrimshaw. Not exactly the way the pro`s do it, but it came out neat none the less. I first ingraved the ship into the bone then took a quill pen and some black ink and filled in the ingraving. Shot it with a light coat of clear laquer, then went back and added some fine detail then after it dried I shot 3 more coats of laquer on it. I really like the results and plan on doing more.

That is really cool. I have been thinking about giving bone carving/skrimshaw, but haven’t got to it yet. I may just have to give it a try on one of my upcoming boxes. Thanks for sharing with us and will be looking forward to seeing more. One question for you…. What did you use to do the engraving?

Smallest carving bit I had for my dremel. Yeah it came out neat, not bad for freehand. Took me about 2 hours to make the complete box.

This is really nice. The skrimshaw is beautiful! I keep my picks in a plastic peanut butter jar:) This is a much classier idea. Great project!

This is a gem of a guitar pick box that is worth having. I know your friend loved this for sure. For guitar players or guitar picks collectors out there, this would be lovely storage for their precious picks. Good job!
