This is my first wood instrument creation. When I was a young boy in the 60’s (that was such a long time ago), my Uncle who was in the Navy came back from a stop in Africa and brought back a Kalimba. So after his stroke last year, I decided to make this for him. It is made from Bloodwood with Bubinga sides. The tines are from an old leaf rake.

Don,
I saw a picture of one of these on Craigslist yesterday for the first time ever. Now I see yours. I’m so curious about them. How did you learn to make it and your other harps? Would you consider sharing with us on a blog here? All of your instruments look intriguing and beautifully executed.
Thanks for sharing and welcome to LJs.

P.S. The crocheted background piece is lovely, too!

Thanks for the comment. I make my instruments from looking at a picture, using basic luthier buiding principles (types of tonewoods to use, correct type of finish, the placing of internal supports for strength) and I create to the music I have playing at the time (country, rock-n-roll, pop, classical). When I have a chance and the time, I have a design in my head for a “king david’s harp”. I will create a blog of it when I start making it.

Don,
I’m really looking forward to following your harp blog. There’s an incredible amount to learn about instrument-building. Thanks for sharing.
