My first project - Blanket chest for sister

This is the first thing I’ve made from wood. I got the itch to build something and my sister said she could use a blanket chest. I bought some wood, glue, clamps, circular saw and a router. I already owned a finishing sander. The only reason for the sander is because I buy pre-made bases for sculptures I make and I finish them. I guess I can make my own bases now that I own a router.

I practiced making dovetails on scrap for a while before trying them on what was to become my finished piece. I think there are about 200 or so. This was the most fun part of the project for me. I decided to make an inlay/border. This was by far the hardest part of the project. The inlay is 3/8” thick marble. I probably won’t do that again on future projects because it wound up being so time consuming, and I cut my hand pretty badly on a broken piece of marble.

The material inside lining was her request. I don’t really care for it and would probably just leave it unstained in the future if I make another. I spent a fair amount of time finishing the piece and found a lot of different techniques on the web. It came out better than I expected and I think she’ll be pleased with it.
