Hello All,

Last Summer I decided to take my family to Disneyland and then to Arizona to visit the in-laws. With gas being what it is we decided to take our Toyota Prius. Well a Prius, four people and their stuff doesn’t squeeze too easily into that car. So I came up with this solution using a Yakima rack and a sheet of Baltic Birch plywood. The result is very functional, water and sun proof, and just what we needed to make the vacation as smooth as possible.

Thanks,

Irwin

Lots of ways to strap stuff down. Nice.

You got that right Tom. The Yakima Q-Clips alone for the Prius were more then the materials to build this rack.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement, it really means a lot.

Irwin, does it latch down onto the crossbars, or is it floating free and relying on weight/wind to keep it down?

Hi Ben,

I used “U” bolts to secure the rack to the Yakima’s crossbars. The overlap on the bars was more to deflect the wind than to secure the rack although that was a nice side effect. During our trip, I still averaged about 30 mpg in the Prius which isn’t too bad given that we had a couple coolers and gear bags strapped down up there.

Thanks again,

Irwin
