Hi Everybody. I just want to share with fellow LJ’s a picture frame made from purple heart. I started out by making a mock up frame with cardboard to get an idea of my dimensions. At first I was going to use ebony mun but did not realize the cost of that wood until I got to the lumber store. I quickly decided that PH would be a great alternative. I used a homemade compass and the router to get the outer and inner circles cut taking about 5 or 6 passes on each. I used a round over bit for the edges and quickly noticed that the machined edge had turned purple wood a ghost white. A few days later it blended back to its purple heritage. I finished it with three coats of antique danish oil giving it a wet look and letting the purple pop out. After the third coat it had a high sheen which I reduced with some #0000 steel wool. Thanks for looking!

You could have used a black dye and stained the wood black to emulate ebony. I can appreciate good work but I would not have that in my house.

The frame turned out great and the purple heart looks perfect for the art work ! I hear Ya on the cost of Ebony, I purchased a small chunk and only use it for accenting.

Awesome I watched a good friend at work make something quite similiar. I believe he used many of the same techniques you speak of.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Moby- this is an older lib tech sticker that my brother enlarged for me for christmas. I have been riding lib techs since the mid 90’s when there edges would pull out of you hit a small rock and they were a small company. They have come a long way especially with magna-traction technology!

Have your say...
