I actually have a decent amount of storage space in my shop. But it’s never enough. I decided to use up more scrap material to make a second workbench cabinet. This helps not only with giving me more room to store things but it also gives my workbench a bit more heft to keep it from moving when I’m working on it.

The cabinet itself is put together using pocket screws. The drawers were made with my Akeda jig. At the time I started this project I didn’t have my Vacuum Veneer Press so I used contact cement to veneer 1/8” walnut to mdf.

The one thing I wanted to point out….In the other cabinet I used all full extension drawer slides which were really easy to adjust to get everything even. In this cabinet I used Blum Drawer slides and they were an incredible PITA to get even. I had them so it made sense to use them but if I can help it, I won’t use them again.

That is just awesome! I wish I had the nerve to do drawers and such for my shop.

Looks great. Yours too, GaryK.

I keep going back and forth about whether I want to add cabinets to mine. I was sure I wanted them until I started reading Chris Schwarz’s stuff (editor of ‘Popular Woodworking’ and ‘Woodworking’). Do you find that they ever get in the way when you want to clamp something to the bench top? Do you ever use holdfasts?

lots of storage and nice use of materials. I agree with the Blum slides they are overrated.

Great looking benches. I am glad to see that you both went beyond getting something functional. This really adds a great deal to the project. I tend to go with merely functional in my shop construction but am beginning to “see the error of my ways” thanks to posts like these.

Muzhik asked, “Do you find that they ever get in the way when you want to clamp something to the bench top? Do you ever use holdfasts?”

It probably doesn’t look like it but there is a three inch overhang on both sides. So I have yet to have a problem with clamping. It really is very convenient to have this storage space available.

Nice benches Tim & Gary. There is never enough storage space.
