So I’ve been putting off this and some other simple shop organization projects for a while now (like hanging the shelf for the planes) I finally got to a tipping point the other day when I was planing the edge of a board and a chisel rolled off the bench and right onto the concrete floor putting a nice big chip in the blade. Two hours of sharpening later I decided it was time to build them a proper home… This was built in a couple hours with two strips of maple flooring I had in a cut-off bin (I have NO idea where I got them since I’ve never installed maple flooring….)

The shelf piece that holds the chisels was planed down to remove the grooves on the back of the flooring, 3/8” holes were drilled on 1 3/4” centers along the length of the board. I then notched out the material at the front on the tablesaw. The shelf is joined to the back plate with countersunk brass screws and glue. I ripped a french cleat from some pine I had laying around and attached it to the back with glue and a few brad nails. I added small spacer blocks on the back at the bottom to help support the weight of the assembly and keep it from tipping down at all. I also added a nice rounded edge with a block plane and fine tooth file. With as easy as this project was I’m kicking myself for not doing it sooner… I think it took longer to fix the edge on the chisel that rolled off the bench than it did to build this rack.
