The only way I could be any newer to carving letters would be if I didn’t know the alphabet. My job as a children’s librarian would be seriously suspect if that were the case.

Anyway. I got a really long basswood board, made a few qquare cut offs and sanded them down. Then I brought them , some carbon paper and a chip carving knife into work.

A few lunch breaks at my desk later I had this. I definetly have a lot to learn about technique and having the carving be smooth. But most everyone in my office wants one, so I have plenty of last names to practice with.

The framing around this in the picture isn’t glued on yet.

Very nice, well done. There a number of good chip carvers on Lumberjocks, a llok at the work of Roger Strautman is to be recommended. Also if you Google Wayne Barton you will see the work of a chip carving master.

Happy carving

Josh, you did a beautiful job on those letters.

Boy I’ll say. That is some nice work for an experienced carver; much less a self-proclaimed novice!

Have your say...
