I decided not to spend the big bucks on a store-bought marking knife…with inspiration from many here on LJ, I decided to make my own. I started with an old jigsaw blade, which I ground to the shape I wanted (with a double-bevel), and honed to a fairly good edge with silicon carbide sandpaper on a smooth granite floor tile from Home Depot. I cut a couple of strips of scrap maple (salvaged from some unfinished cabinet doors that a friend gave me many years ago), chiseled out a space for the blade to fit, epoxied them together, then went to work with a rasp and sandpaper. The shape is simple, but comfortable in my hand, and flat enough that it won’t roll on the benchtop.
