“Batten Down The Hatches” – Approx. 2740 Liberty Ships were made from 1941 – 1945. These hatches covered portions of the decks of these ships, which transported troops, equipment and supplies during WWII. You can almost hear the sounds aboard as you can only attempt to imagine what went on with our brave soldiers on those ships. Some made it to there destination, and some didn’t. I found stories of some of the ships built in New Orleans in 90 days start to float…......90 days. These people knew how to work!! I couldn’t think of anything more fitting to do with these covers. The top and legs are made from the same cover, and the stretcher is reclaimed cypress, and the feet are reclaimed fir. I put a fairly thinned coat of linseed oil on this one.
