I got a great deal on some purple heart when I knew nothing about wood. It had some white cracks that went all they way through is some spots.

Surprisingly the dense wood doesn’t sounds very different from the pine drums.

They are heavy and don’t have much of a mark on the from a lot of abuse.

I popped one of the heads on one. I haven’t had a chance to replace it yet.

The weaving on the drum is called the mali weave. It can get the drum head very tight.

Personal taste: I think these look better than the all pine drum in another post. I am sure they are much heavier, though.

Nice job, these look great. What material is the top? It looks like leather?

That’s a great project…so what is the drum head made out of?

Hey Bill and dennis, The drum head is goat skin that I ordered online. You can check it out at http://www.africanrhythmtraders.com/html/supplies.html. They sell a variety of skins there.

Have your say...
