This is my first attempt at carving. I was picking up some walnut from the lumberyard and got this reject log. I believe it is Poplar, and measures 55 inches long. I laid out the letters and then hand carved them in the beginning with a half inch chisel. I got halfway through and said screw this, after which I went to Lowe’s and got a two inch chisel :-) After I had carved an inch, I then switched to a router since I had a base for the roller bearing. Finished with three coats of spar urethane.
