I recently finished this bed for myself. I designed it to be very functional for me because I like to read in bed, so the headboard has a slight angle for leaning against, lights on each side that offer plenty of light (switches are hidden directly under each light), and a cove for books right at pillow level. The pillows can hide the cove but I like to leave it visible. The hard part was integrating the light into the overall design so they wouldn’t look cheesy or tacked on. I also like to add some ‘chaos’ sometimes so I carved some simple, subtle lines into the headboard to compliment the overall rectilinearness (if that’s a word), which are displayed by ‘bracketing’ with the aluminum frame that hold the light panels in.
It’s not a true platform though because the mattress is actually sitting on the box springs which the side rails are covering. I made this change when I realized that it’s hard to purchase a mattress without the box spring and it’s less comfortable. But this makes it much easier to disassemble and move while maintaining the low platform look.
What I learned is that I love the natural look and simple application of tung oil and wax. Also, I learned a valuable lesson in wood shrinkage because I noticed a small gap between the solid wood in the headboard and the aluminum in the light frame that wasn’t there when I finished it. luckily it’s not too noticeable.

Beautiful, Nate. I’ve been kicking around the idea of building a bed myself. This might just get me off of my … Love how you incorporated the lights. Much better than a metal arm hanging off of the side. Welcome to LJ. Looking forward to what else you have to offer.

Quite beautiful, especially the finish.
Somehow, though, I envision banging my achilles tendons on the platform every time I get out of bed. :-)

Nice work! Really like the carving in the headboard… did you do that freehand with a router?
Tung oil is such a smooth finish… just begs to be touched… which is not a bad thing in a bed!?

Thanks guys,
Damien, the “must blatantly ripoff at a later date file”. I like that. I need to start one of those. I would definitely have your whisky table in there.

another great design Nate! I love the scribed lines in the headboard and the way the center panel appears to be floating. Both give the otherwise hefty form a great lightness.

The light panels are a fiberglass weave, sandwiched between plexi. I found it at a plastic store that does a lot of custom fishtanks and display boxes. I have no idea what it’s regularly used for, but I thought it looked cool.

I like this a lot. You have a great design sense and I like you you work with aluminum. The carvings are a really nice touch and the light idea is genius. Nice job. Hopefully you’ve invited someone over to share it with ;)

beautiful :) I like the incorporation of the lights into the headboard, and the overall simplicity in design – it opens up the space, and keeps it elegant!
