Before hurricane Ike, we had a Purple Martin house, but it like a lot of other things was knocked down by the storm. So, I was finally able to get a replacement done and with a lot of help from SWMBO, it was installed in the back yard this last weekend. It’s not the greatest bit of craftsmanship, but I think the birds won’t mind. We made it from salvaged cedar siding from the old house, which was cleaned, planed down, ripped, cut, assembled and varnished.

The whole house slides up and down a mast made from Pressure treated lumber, with a wire rope and winch to haul it up. it can also be brought down for cleaning and servicing

Great job! I wish I had one myself! Where did you locate the plans?

Very cool! Excuse me for my ignorance, do you have to clean these from time to time or them being wild birds do you just let them be? Well I think you know I’m a city boy by that question. LOL nice projects hope things are getting back to normal after Ike.

The plans are available on line at http://purplemartins.whazsup.com/ Nothing to do with me; we just bought them there.

SWMBO is the Purple Martin fancier. I just enable her. :) Apparently the nests ought to be cleaned out occasionally to keep the fledglings from being infected by parasites, or something. I will have no part in that, apart from emptying out the vacated nests. Lord knows how these birds survive without humans. Yes, I’m being sarcastic.
But all in all, It’s nice to watch them do their thing, and I’m all for them eating mosquitos.

I think it terrific, and I am sure the Martins will think the same.
