Coffee Table

Made this coffee table after getting another steal at the lumber store. I found a piece of birch that had flame going all the way through it. And got it for around $3 a bf. I had been wanting to make a coffee table inspired by my two black & tan dachshunds. We call them “the longbodies.” I thought it would be cool to make a coffee table that seemed almost “too” long. I put the legs right to the edge and used through wedged tenons to hold the stretchers in there tightly. The leg assemblies are mortised and pegged (which is more for the look). I wanted a danish look to this one but using a more Scandinavian-style wood. I cut the top to shape with a bandsaw, cleaned up the edges with a spokeshave, and then beveled the underside with a plane by hand to give the top that thin look.

If you haven’t made a piece of furniture out of birch, you are really missing out. It’s a wonderful wood to work. And with flame is breathtaking in the sun. As you can see, I haul it out in the sun as often as possible…..

I love your design aesthetic; a craftsman’s version of mid-century modern. It’s awesome. It’s the kind of furniture I want in my house. Straight baller, yo. Fo’ real. Your furniture really is quite breathtaking and I look forward to seeing more of your work. I would like to genuinely thank you for sharing these four pieces.

I agree with the previous post – GREAT designs on all four of the pieces you shared! Thank you!

But the best part is the inspiration for this table… your two pups! That opens up a whole new area for consideration in design.
