Ever since I saw Andy’s Art boxes I wanted to make one. My girl’s school is having an auction next weekend so I decided to make a pen. My next thought was making a box to put the pen in. I have been dying to try an “Art” box. I printed up Andy’s blog and headed to the shop. I have two days no problem. Well… I had to buy a new rabbit bit, pattern bit and make a spline jig, picture attached. I actually made two boxes, because Andy said, “Aways make a practice box first”. I will finished the other one later. As you can see the top and body is curly maple with a cocobolo medallion. The splines and handle are paduak. I finished it with BLO and Watco Danish oil the wax on top. I first tried lacquer but it would not lay down good, so I re sanded it and put a “softer finish” on it. I liked the box so much I will submit it separately to raise even more money. the inside is not finished yet, I have a friend who is great with leather and he said he will line it for me. I then will put dividers in.

What I really like about this type of box is the feeling you get when you take a grinder to your box. Up to that point you have “babied” it and made it as close to perfect as you can. Then….. Grind and sand away!!!! Ahhhh the feeling!!

Thanks Andy for the inspiration.

Wow! The contrasting woods make this box a real eye catcher!

Veeeery nice box, Greg.
And, that’s one sweet spline jig, too.
I’ll PM you with a thought.

Hi Greg;

Great looking job on both the box, and the spline jig.

Great looking box Gbrown4. Your wood combination is an excellent choice and for a first box you made it look like you have done many previous boxes. You probobly have started a new addiction for yourself with this. I know it has become one for me.

great job! I’m currently in the process of making one also. I can’t wait to get to the grinding part. The handle on your jig is a really good idea. I might have to steal that idea.
