I made this center for my neighbor who wanted a grainy wood to match the pattern and color of his AV equipment. I used General Finishes black water-based stain and 4 top coats of semi-gloss poly-acrylic sprayed with Earlex HVLP system.

SWEET project! As a fan of natural wood finishes, I would struggle staining something like this. But, WOW, this looks terrific. Great job! Thanks for sharing. Play / be safe.

Thanks everybody… I had a hard time accepting the whole “black” color idea, but at the end of the day I was pleased with the finish. I too, like you Mayflower tend to stick to natural wood finishes so this was quite an adventure. Let me share though that General Finishes makes a heck of stain… There is no question that this is black. I saw some video on youtube of Charles Neil working with this particular color, but he also added India ink to the product for a darker finish. In my opinion, I don’t really see how you can get much darker than the pure stain itself.
