This is the latest version of my USAF Chevron shadow box. The recepient requested a light colored box with dark stripes. I was apprehensive because I had never made one with the dark stripes and was not sure how it would look. I had recently been using a whitewash stain on the stripes to give more contrast to the dark stain on the boxes. So I thought it might provide a similar contrast if I whitewashed the box. But I wanted approval from the customer.
When the customer delivered the items to be mounted I had prepared some samples with scraps from the box construction. I had already stained the stripes dark. Then I finished one scrap natural with tung oil and one with the whitewash stain and a coat of tung oil. They opted for the whitewash stain and I’m glad they did. I think the visual contrast between the stripes and the box is fantastic. But I may be a little prejudiced. Thanks for looking.
