Heres a little box I made for my wifes mom. It is ammonia fumed red oak with maple and mahogany inlay on the lid and then 3 coats of wipe on satin poly. This was the first time I have tried to do an inlay and also the first time i did a mitered top. the top took a little figuring out to get the angles right but came out pretty good

this was the 4th box i have made, im starting to get a little faster making them but sanding still takes forever. i try to do something new on each one i make

anyways my wifes mom really liked it

Hi Mike. Nice job. Did you do the fuming, how long? Looks good, keep it up.

hey john, yeah i did the fuming. The original color of the red oak on this piece was quite pinkish and with the fuming process the wood goes a little on the green side with red oak so it kind of takes the pink out of the wood and turns it a more mellow color which i like. The pictures dont really do the color justice

for fuming i just used regular store bought ammonia and placed it in a small cup and put the piece and the cup in a plastic storage bin with a snap on lid and left it in there over night. it takes awhile to get a real big color change with the weaker ammonia but i left a piece of red oak in for a week once and it was a real dark green almost black

Ok Mike, Thanks, that answers my questions. I’ll have to try it on some of my pieces.
