My version of a J-3 Cub.
I can make quite a few of these from a 2 by 4.
Original project designed as a use for some scrap wood I had laying about. I drew the plans for the airplane and the fixtures needed to build the wings. The wings are built from ribs and spars as in the full size airplane. The wings are then covered/wrapped with thin veneer made with the band saw.
The wheels were turned on my lathe and the propeller is carved with a proper twist. The wing span is about 20 inches or so.
A lot of sanding and then painted with Krylon. The most difficult part of the protect, for me, was masking and painting the lightning bolt graphic on the fuselage sides.

That’s a great plane, Prop. I’ve made a few for scale R/C flying. They look neater than they fly. They have a really short tail moment and a huge wingspan and are well known for their “ground loops,” on take off. I’ve put some floats on a couple. They can be fun flyers. That’s a neat version!

Hi Tom,
If the main gear is setup with about 2 degrees of toe they will track as straight as an arrow on the take off roll. I have built the R/C versions of the Cubs in many sizes up to 1/3 scale. Also have a little stick time in a few of the full size versions.

Nice plane. I have built a few crashers also in my day. Stuck with helicopters.

I have about 800 hours instructing in J-3s. The heater works well…, if it is above 65 degrees.

I too have built and flown many RC versions of the J3.
The thing I like about it’s flying is when in real slow flight, almost on stall, the ailerons will appear to be reversed. When the port side is up it will not catch the air flow, and starboard down will just induce more drag, so instead of rolling to the left, you actually will turn right.
The J3 is a great airplane and your project is a nice reproduction.

I just saw this for the first time when I logged in tonight (was in the Roll the dice) area.
I really like it!!! I think that would be a fun project to have and to hang in our basement..(if I can ever finish it!)

I owned a full size Cub for a while. Fun airplane if you weren’t in a hurry. I’ve looked down many times and seen the traffic passing me. Thanks for the memory.
