Whilst waiting to start something bigger, I decided to ‘have a go’ at a box, using the shape from SteveMarins video.

The narrowest blade I have is 1/4 inch, so some of the tighter curves got a bit wide, but as others have said, they are a fun project. Unfortunately, it appears that a 1/8 inch blade is NOT available for my little bandsaw, so any future designs will have to have larger internal radii.

Don,

First of all – NICE box! Great first attempt.

All is not lost if you really want a 1/8th inch blade. You can purchase a blade splicing kit from a few sources on the interwebs. Here’s an example from Lee Valley: http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?c=&p=41049&cat=1,41036

I bought this kit from JK Woodcraft as well as a 100ft roll of blade. I figure I can make 10 blades for my bandsaw out of this roll. It take a small amount of getting used to, but makes really nice joints.

Also, you can repair a broken blade if it’s a clean break. :-)

Good luck!

Great looking bandsaw box, they are addictive to make. Every-time I walk past my “bits and pieces” box I look for a big enough chunk of something to make a box out of.
KnotCurser thanks for the tip on the bandsaw kit, I too have trouble finding the 1/8” blades.

Don,
That is a very nice “first try”. I intend to make a bandsaw box sometime, they are fascinating.
Well done.

Thanks for the kind comments guys – I forgot to mention that ubiquitous Danish was again my choice of finish (its soooo easy !)

KnotCurser – thanks for the tip. I CAN find a splicer, but my little band saw takes 0.014 inch thick blades, which do not seem to be available over here at 1/8 wide.
