My wife has been asking “in earnest” for the past few months for me to make her a desk-sized likeness of the light-up letter “K” that the band “The Killers” use as a central prop in their stage show (Pic 3).
A few weeks ago I ordered a string of 50 LED lights. When it arrived I didn’t quite realize just how much cord was involved – this letter had to be just a tad larger than I planned just to hold all the wire!
It is made entirely out of walnut and stands around 11 inches high and is just over 2 inches thick. I drilled the 50 holes in the face, then removed the bulbs from the cord and glued them into place prior to fastening the face to the body. (pic 5).
As you can see in the last pic, I BARELY had enough room to pack all of the cable into the body before I glued on the back. I already told my wife that if one of the bulbs burns out it stays dark. ;-)
Finish was spray lacquer.
This was a very, very unique project to work on and went fairly smooth once I started cutting. Start to finish, it took less than two days of work.
She loves it and I think it’s pretty cool as well.
