Koa, Maple with Leaf accent. This little box is from the suitcase of Koa i hauled back from Hawaii a couple of years ago. The box is square, about 5×5 inches with curved sides and maple splines. The lift-off lid features a carved Koa leaf (note the two-piece leaf with the grain running at 45 degrees to the center vein). The bottom is dadoed in and lined with black velvet. It is finished in spray semigloss poly.

Pleasant shape and nice use of the sapwood. The leaf compliments the figure and offers a textural element. I often have mixed feelings about splines, but these work nicely with the heartwood/sapwood contrast. You seem to have an endless repertoire of tasteful shapes. I am envious.

What a little treasure. You work with some beautiful wood, and do it justice!

Plenty of nice detail in such a small box. The woods are beautiful together, as usual nice work…BC

Small boxes like this are a great way to show off a special piece of wood – yours is beautiful and I like the outside shape. How do you do your shaping? I’m not a big carver, but your pieces inspire me to try more on my boxes – I like the organic feel that the leaves lend to your pieces.

Really like the shape of this box John. And Koa can only add to the elegance of any box. I generally perfer not to have accent splines in boxes but these don’t deter from the box. Your personalized touch of carving on boxes is a real plus. Would have been nice to have a couple more photos of the box from different angles and the inside. Fine work!
