Small wine rack made from red oak. Got the plan from one of the woodworking magazines. It is the first real project I have done outside of benches or shelves. The plan called for maple and walnut and a clear finish but getting walnut and maple in this area is almost impossible. It was a good learning project because I was able to make dado cuts, mortise and tenon joints and cut curves…all for the furst time. Learned alot…mainly to finish sanding as much as possible before glue up. And also to buy some small disposable HF brushes for glue because I had too much squeeze out and you know the headaches that causes.

A nice looking wine rack with an oriental flare! Mortise and tenons are fun stuff!

Happy Camper – To be honest with you the finish was a disaster. I started making it just to have something to do and the “boss” decided she wanted it for the kitchen and wanted it dark. Started with red mahogany stain and it wasn’t dark enough. I had some redwood gel stain and sheen from literally 10 years ago that I started rubbing that on it. On top of the red mahogany it gives it a really dark black cherry look. I then sprayed 5 coats of poly. Only the 3rd piece I have ever stained so I am still a newbie.

Kindlingmaker – Thanks. We didn’t even notice the oriental flare in the magazine. It was only after we had it together!!!!
