Well here it.. my first turned pen, actually my first turned anything. I came home a little while ago from my local Woodcrafters where I took the pen turning class. The class was good the instructor told us agood amount and gave some tips and tricks as well for setting up to do pens. We were able to select our blanks from an assortment box they had there. So I decided on this bloodwood blank as I rememebred seeing bloodwood in multiple projects here.
It came out pretty good. I need some more practice and am interested in possibly getting it. Just have to figure out how to afford a small lathe to start out.

Very nice. I like them slimmer rather than fatter.

Nice pen and congratulation for entering into the vortex… now that you are in it…. you won’t be able to get out!

That is mighty fine for a first turning. I still keep and use ‘old number one.’

Find a way to get yourself the lathe, very relaxing standing at a lathe. Pens can be addictive, the wife and I gave pens to coworkers this last Christmas.
Watch auctions in your area, i picked-up a decent lathe at one for 25$ that was mounted on a homemade stand with wheels. Not the best one but gets me started.

I agree with Joel, pens can be additive. Nothing to do-turn a pen, and they are great gifts.

I turn some as well, so welcome to the club!
one thing to keep in mind is that the lathe ends up being the least expensive part of the whole hobby! You’ll also need a grinding wheel, chisels, drill press, pen mandrel, pen kits, pen mill… you get the point.
take a look through some catalogs like woodcraft and that should help you figure out what kind of budget you will need to get started.
then you can start working on the segmented stuff! Good luck!

I started with a Woodcraft class too. Way to go. The pen looks great, and you are well on your way to overspending on new equipment, attachments, tools, kits, and junk like the rest of us.
Happy turning!

Thanks All. I did really enjoy the class and contemplating taking one of the other turning classes in order to make sure I am interested in spending money on something to turn other things then just pens. If I do I am sure I will be posting more projects.
