'Pretty box ' syndrome

My mom suffers from ‘pretty box syndrome’. You could give her used chewing gum, but if it’s wrapped up in a ‘pretty box’- she’ll absolutely love it. So I decided to make her a permanent ‘pretty box’ for christmas.

The box is curly maple. The ribbon is lacewood veneer. Bow is some laminated mahogany. The laminations make it look like there is some figure going on in the bow. (Just lucked out on that part.) Instead of fighting each other, the different wood figure seems to complement each other. Don’t think this shows up quite as well in pictures as in person. The whole thing is finished with BLO to help pop the grain. I followed that with a couple of coats of arm-m-seal wipe on finish. Seems to be a good product, but haven’t decided if I like it yet.

I put it in a plain wrapped box for Christmas and waited for her to open it. Let’s just say she didn’t look like she expected much from this present. Then she opened it. Her happy scream got the even the dog all excited! Took her half an hour before she realized there was some chocolate in the box too. The late posting is because it took this long to get the box back for a few pictures. I think she likes it.

Well, that’s just really beautiful. I generally don’t do any blatant copying (except for an occassional Stickley thing), but if I ever get the go-ahead from you, I’d make a similar one for my wife.

Now “that” is certainly a very pretty box. The ribbon and the bow are just enough ornamentation without overdoing the decoration. Great job.

Saw something similar to this on a woodworker’s tv show, they called theirs “ribbon box”. Anyway, yours has more detail and takes their notion up a notch. Nice job all around.
