Bunk Bed

My brother in law purchased a bed from a man who had built it years ago and when I saw it I thought the design was so simple, yet sturdy and nice to look at that I wanted to do something similar for my two sons.
I modified the design, but kept with the basic concept. I added a 2” block in the posts at the bottom to lift the head and foot board off the floor and separate the two from each other between beds as well since the head and footboards also serve as a ladder.
I customized all the dimensions around the mattress and the room they are in and not the original bed, and I added the rails because my boys are both young and wild sleepers.
The construction is very sturdy and I was happy with the results.
My wife and I purchased a bed at a store when my younger boy needed to get out of a crib, it was starting to fall apart and I needed to replace it. My wife and I would have never laid with our sons on there old bed because it probably would have broke… we are both confident enough to climb right up into the top bunk which my wife does now frequently to read to them without any fear of the bed being able to support us.
This bed is made of 2×6’s 1×4’s and a few 2×8’s and 2×2’s… it was simple in design and in material. It was also less expensive to build than the cheap bed we bought and more sturdy than $1500 beds that we had been looking at.
The bed cost me about $200 to build and I couldn’t be happier with it.
Although my web site is about wood burning, I did include a small “how to” in that section that goes over how I made the bed including a material list. I will add a kink. There is a plan but the dimensions are hard to read, if anyone is interested in a plan just e-mail me and I will be glad to send you a copy.

Beds seems so simple until you go to build one, especially for kids. Will it be sturdy enough? What if they wander when they sleep? All kinds of things start to come to mind. It looks like you’ve covered them all and in a very attractive way. Good job.

Very nicely done. I’ll bet the little buckaroos are happy with it, too.
