Well, if I’m going to compete, then I figure I should go all in. In for a dime, in for a dollar so to speak. So I started thinking on this when I started working on my box(es). It really was a bit of a challenge to visualize just how much wood was contained in a 2×4. As a result it took me a bit longer to commit to something.

The music stand I made for a friend at work was quite a hit. Not only was he surprised, but he even liked it and asked if I might consider making one using a more exotic wood. Of course there are still things to work out before doing that. But, I digress.

I figured I could make another music stand because it was fresh in my mind and from what I could tell there would be enough wood in the 2×4 to do it. One thing I did not count on, was how much wood you lose by resawing on a tablesaw. My lack of a real bandsaw made the table saw the only available tool. As it turns out, I have a 1.5×1.5 6 inch stick left.

The most fun was the cutting the slots and tenons for the back slats and side rails. At 1/8 in thick my dexterity and propensity to force things was a bit challenged. For fun, I shaped the feet and the sides using my bench top belt sander. I was sculpting … or I least I pretended to be.

All in all, the challenge was just that and a learning experience to boot. I am continually fascinated by the things that are coming from a single 2×4 and that, in itself, make this a valuable experience.

Oh yeah, I’ve heard that process pictures are generally appreciated, so the third picture is me in the process of checking the battery on my camera. They worked.

The stand looks very nice. The battery check works, too.

From some of the other projects that are being posted, or hinted at, I’m also amazed at what can be made from a lowly 2×4 stick of wood. Yours is no exception, great idea, great implementation and execution.

Great music stand. Very inventive! I never saw one inside a 2×4.

haha this is wonderful.
Your story is very entertaining and it warms my heart. (pretending to sculpt made me chuckle).

I love hearing how this challenged you and you went for it!
Well done.
the process picture is cute..
Love it!
(and quite the compliment that the gentleman wants another one!)

That’s neat Russel. Looks like you achieved a good finish on the softwood too. Now, is that a spot of blood on your left shoe?

It may be blood, but it may also be jelly from a donut. After a while, it all looks the same.

Now that’s thinking outside of the box. Would have never thought of making a music stand out of a single 2×4.
