I built this Jewelry Chest custom for an online client. This chest is constructed of Wenge and Hard Maple.
Her needs were for storage for her many sets of ear plugs.

The 3 drawers for the ear plugs hold a combined 120 pairs. The holders are made of clear acrylic and rest on Hard Maple runners. The fourth drawer has Maple dividers for storing other jewelry pieces. All the drawer interiors are lined with black micro-suede. The drawers are held in the case with rare earth magnets on the back of the drawers. The magnets are for just in case the chest gets tipped or while moving it, the drawers will not come tumbling out.

Ear plugs?

-- When questioned about using glue on a garbage bin I responded, "Wood working is about good technique and lots of glue........I have the glue part down."

Thats what I thought when she asked if I could build a jewelry chest for them. Ear Plugs fit in an oversizes hole in the ear. Pierced ears to the extreme!!!

Very nice work. Where do you get the microsuede from?

Awesome storage chest : )
How did you determine the size of the magnets to use ?

You can get micro-suede at most fabric stores. I mount it on poster board with spray adhesive so it has a little more body and doesn’t slide around inside the drawers.

The magnets I size by the amount of strength needed. The ones these drawers are 3/8” x 1/10”. I use washers on the back of the chest so I don’t have to worry about the polarity of the magnets.

Nice job! Ear plugs peaked my interest as well. Looks like an Asain style which I like. Great colors on this as well.

Simple, elegant, clean design… I love it. I’m going to have to try the rare earth magnet idea on my next box. Do they hold just enough or do you find pulling a drawer out causes the entire piece to move with it till it releases? I have some of the really small neodymium magnets I use for RC plane applications and those little buggers hold on tight for their size. Would one magnet centered hold enough or does it really need the two?

Beautiful work, She’ll definitely love it.

-- Are you going to use that piece of scrap?

Very nice design. The contrasting woods are great and the drawer pulls are simple, but elegant. Great little chest you have made!
