2 Clocks

I decided to try my hand at a couple of clocks. They are very different from each other. The larger “wave” clock is made using cherry and is 10 inches long by about 5 1/2 inches high. I put it on a wenge base that is barely visible but gives it a little more “profile”. The smaller, more contemporary one is made using maple and walnut. I made it in about 30 minutes using some scraps. Of course, that 30 minutes doesn’t count the time finishing it! Both are works in progress in the sense that I would like to improve on the design. I’m not really happy with the clock mechanisms but Dusty56 is recommending that I check out the Seiko mechanism.

Ellen, those are both super nice !
Your eye for design shines with this example of totally different, but equally cool looks.
I’d like to try a couple of clocks and I’m going to look in to that Seiko mechanism.
Great job.

Hi, Ellen:
I like them both but I really love the maple/walnut one the best. The simplicity of it along with the contrast of the wood and the nice finishing really make it look nice. Very nice!

I really like the Maple and Walnut design , but I’m not sure about the black face…Of course pictures can be deceiving , so I’ll have to see it in person later this year when we all get together again : )

Hi Ellen. Great looking pieces. Chalk up another vote for the maple/walnut one as my favorite of the two. Nice design, contrasting wood, etc. The wave clock might be well received in coastal communities (hint, hint), say, Cape Cod for instance. The thing about it is if you look at it long enough, it begins to have a whimsical look to it. In fact, in the photo of it alone, it kind of looks like a sperm whale. I don’t imagine you were going for that look but it’s there. Best wishes as you work on this concept.

One more vote for the Maple and Walnut.

interesting pieces! What kind of movement are they? We probably want to avoid them too, eh? ;-))

I like them, too! Creative designs. I’m also intrigued by the music score tabletop.

Hi Ellen,

The clocks came out beautiful and it looks like you had fun making them and that is what it is all about.
Again you have my favourites together Walnut and Maple, you certainly have a eye for putting different coloured woods together.

Thanks for sharing Ellen.

Cool little time pieces, Ellen. It looks like you had a good day in the shop creating them.
I also saw a whimsical whale rather than a wave.
About finishing… I am trying to convince myself that it is Fun, Fun, Fun. Without a good finish, even a masterpiece will look bad. Your clocks look great!

It’s amazing how 2 “scraps” of wood can be used to create such a striking piece! I’ve always liked the combo of maple & walnut so that’s my favorite too. And I’m sure that you’ll come up with some more designs to make the beauty of wood shine!
