My daughter and son-in-law are expecting thier first child this summer and space on the family bed will be at a premium. Olive, the beloved family pet, was so used to sleeping in comfort with mom and dad that I thought she should have her own bed that was almost as comfortable! After some research I found out dog beds are expensive (2to3 hundred dollars),and have no suspension. So I came up with this simple solution. Its a throwback to my free spirited days of the early 70’s when I built a rope bed for our old 67 VW micro bus! Its made from an 8ft 4×4, a 14ft 2×6 ,a 4ft leftover piece of 2×12 and a 10 dollar lenght of rope. So for about 40 bucks and a lot of fun for me , sweet Olive has her own bed. They tell me she really likes it. It’s up off the floor and has a little spring in it, just like she’s used to! Sleep tight Olive! I should add that I put a heavy carpet remnant on the rope and then placed her stuffed bed within the 2×6 frame.

This is AWESOME! Lucky grand-doggie. My nine year old Golden (“Kelly”) is starting to slow down and I was thinking of making her a nice bed. As you point out, most designs have no suspension. Great concept. Since Kelly is a rope fanatic (as a play and tug-of-war toy), it would be prudent of me to conceal the rope edges. Thanks for sharing!

Cool bed. Looks almost people sized in this picture. Maybe your son-in-law could use it when he is in the “Dog House”. LOL

Great idea, I wish I had thought of it for my dog. One of my cats would use a bed like this. You make me miss the 70’s, too – lol.

Wow a awesome job on olives bed. It looks very nice. I been wanting to make my cocker spaniel a bed, However i do not have the room to put it when shes not sleeping. I will come up with something. Superb craftsmanship.

I slept on a full size one of these at camp one summer and it was one of the most comfortable beds I ever had.
These would sell well with the doggy set!
