Built this checkers table for friend that wanted a Christmas gift for her husband. It was a late notice kind of thing and while I wanted to build the checker board from scratch, time did not allow. Thus, we found a nice wood checker board online, and I built the table around the board. Used a domino jointer for joining legs and apron. The very small drawer holds the wooden checkers. The wood is spanish cedar for weather resistance and outdoor use. The finish is 8 coats of Epifanes clear marine varnish to protect it from the elements (even though it is not left outside. Spanish cedar is a nice wood, a bit on the soft side, chips quite a bit when chiseling the dovetails for the drawer front, and smells very nice. When sanded and finished it is quite smooth and very pleasing look.
