This is a fireplace surround I built for our house. It is mostly red oak with lace wood panels and inlay. The most fun part of the project wan the half spindles on the legs. I glued up two sets 3 pieces of 1 by 6 red oak, then glued news paper in between the two sets of boards. This gave me a blank that was about 5.5 inches square. I turned the legs and then took a chisel and put it on the glue line where the news paper had been placed. The turning split perfectly into two pieces. I have made a few more surrounds and still get a kick out of how easily the wood splits at the newspaper line. Pretty fun!
