Rocking horse

This was a rocking horse gift for some friends. The horse is made of maple body and legs, cherry tail and rockers, and a walnut saddle.

All pieces and corners have been rounded with a 1/4” round over bit on the router table then the entire piece was sanded to 320 grit to ensure the safety of small hands. The mouth of the horse has been softened with rasps and files and finally sanded with PSA 320 grit sandpaper attached to a dowel.

The eyes were turned on a lathe then sanded smooth. The house is assembled with food safe glue and spray finished with food safe salad bowl finish.

The final finishing step was the rub out of finish with wool lube and sanding pads up to 500 grit.

A fun project that will be a family heirloom for decades.

Nice job. Good selection of wood species. They look really nice and will be rugged.

This is one of the nicest rocking horses I have ever seen. Well done.

Did you use a pattern? If so, can you tell us where you got the pattern?

I have to make one of these for birthday in June.

I did use a pattern for the rocking horse. The pattern came from Woodcraft magazine vol. 5/No.31 Oct/Nov09. Enjoy the build.

The variety of woods is very attractive and your pony should withstand lots of riding! Thanks for sharing.
