Gaston Lagaffe is a famous Belgian comics character drawn by Franquin.

I was asked by a friend to scroll Gaston with his cigarette (now it’s not more allowed to have characters with a cigarette in Belgium …) which I did with pleasure. He really enjoyed this unique piece of work and add it to his collection !

To learn more about him : http://www.gastonlagaffe.com/

Nicely done. You really captured the character well Muriel. What material is the black? Is it just black paper behind the scrollsawn wood or is it another piece of wood that you have coloured black? Just curious.

This is really neat, I just got my new scroll saw and would love to attempt something like this it would be awesome if you could talk about your process a little bit, and I’d also like to know what the black is.

GASTON!!! might be from Belgium, but being from Montreal I definitely remember reading the comic books with him in it! as well as Tintin and Asterix and Obelix!

Nice comments !

The black is simply wood painted in black.

How to :
- put a copy of the choosen subject on a thin wood (here 3 mm) with repositionable spray glue,
- drill a very small whole in each peace you have to cut (appearing in black on the picture), the smallest whole is the best, you just need enough space for the saw blade (I used a reverse tool blade Nbr 1) to go through
- start cutting the smallest pieces first very carefully, to secure the work once a piece is cut out, leave it in place with a scotch paper,
- go on cutting all pieces
- remove the cutted pieces and carefully sand
- apply varnish, oil or any product you prefer
- saw another piece of wood, same dimensoins and paint it in black
- glue the 2 pieces together
- frame you work
... it’s done
Last but not least : practice and always more practice and you’ll get it … it is not complicated you need to be concentrated and very careful.

More info also available on http://www.scrollsawer.com/tools-and-tips/scroll-saw-basics.html

I use a Proxxon scrollsaw, on th pictu you’ll see I was scrolling 18 mm pinewood which gives another effect.

Those are really the basics, there are very good articles in the Scrollsawer magazine (others probably also exists) !
Hope this helps.

The colour picture was extracted from the web and changed to black & white with Adbe Photoshop.
Have fun !
