These are just a few presents I made for last Christmas that I didn’t get around to posting till now. The first is a Padauk and Rock Maple cutting board, a la The Wood Whisperer. Big hit with Sis-n-law.
The next are screwdrivers and a marking knife. I picked up two screwdriver kits after last Christmas (Jan 2010) on sale. I made three blanks of walnut and oak in a Celtic knot sort of thing (there are a number of how-tos on this site for this) and started turning. I made three blanks because I am pretty new to turning and needed two screwdrivers. Sure enough, I messed up the first one, but managed to get the next two to come out ok. I missed the mark on the ferule for one of them and had to go with a piece of copper pipe. Still came out ok, and my brother and brother in law seemed to like them.
I took the failed blank from the first screwdriver attempt and managed to salvage it as a handle for a marking knife (my present for me!). The next two pics are of this. The blade is a piece of an old sawblade, ground to fit and sharpened up nice.
The last shot is a screwdriver I made for my wife after she was admiring the ones for my bros. It’s a good bit slimmer to fit her hand, and rather than the Rockler kit I used an inexpensive magnetic bit holder and a brass compression nut for a ferule, which was fun in and of itself. This screwdriver is Padauk and Yellowheart
Thanks for looking!
