My uncle gave me some rough cherry boards he milled from trees he cut down when building his house. I turned them into small side tables – about the right size to sit beside an easy chair and set a drink down on. I had just enough lumber for three tables – one for me, one for my uncle and one for my dad. Since all our last names start with W (duh!) I thought a little customization was in order. In stead of dovetails for the drawer joints I made “W tails.” If you tilt your head to the left it looks like a letter W. Still plenty strong for this little drawer but I thought it was a nice custom touch.

Neat idea! I love working with cherry. I like the design, yours? or a plan?

Thanks. This was my first project in cherry and it is a very nice wood to work with. The sides of the drawers are actually white oak that I had left over. The design is all mine. It was not the first time I tried modifying the profile of the dove tails. I made a night stand for my wife with the tops of her initials, BHW, holding the drawer front to the sides. The fit was not as tight as I would like (I need more practice) but the contrast between the walnut front and white oak sides was nice.

Stoffer, nice work, particularly like you willingness to experiment with joints.
Most of my joints turn out to be experiments as well. LOL

I love the drawers. I have a dovetail jig, so mine are all uniform, but the lack the sweetness of homemade. Very nice.
