First turned bowl, Cherry burl

There has been some firewood stacked up against the fence since we moved in two years ago and this year i donated it to a fellow who heated with wood. I didn’t even know that it was cherry until we started loading up the truck. I pulled out three nice chunks of burl and gave the rest away. Yesterday i put a piece of the burl under the proverbial knife and found some neat grain hiding underneath.

I have a small shop fox 10×16 1/2 horse lathe and this is my first bowl but it was a lot of fun and I’ll definitely be doing some more. (surprisingly the rough blank caused nearly no excess vibration from the lathe. I was definitely impressed with the Shop Fox). Finish is a oil/wax friction polish for pens.

Nice job. If this is your first, you’ll be hooked. I can see many more to come.

Nice find in the wood pile. I like cherry Burl. Despite the voids etc, it turns well and smells great. Have fun.
