Allright, its official: My 8 year old daughter now has better bedroom furniture than her parents. This nightstand measures 26” tall x 22” wide x 18” deep. This is an upgrade for my daughter’s previous nightstand, which was a simple shaker round stand. This is the third and final piece for her room which includes her bed and a bookcase.

I made the base and drawer case from some left-over ribbon sapele and purple heart from my previous table projects. The legs are a curved taper on two of the outer edges starting at 1 5/8” and widening to 2” at the bottom. The top carries a steep 14 degree bevel cut on the two sides that are reminiscent of the asian style pagodas. The lower shelf floats on a set of 3 cross rails that really added to the stability of this project. The drawer is dovetailed with a nifty table saw sled for cutting dovetail pins that I learned from Jeff Miller of J. Miller Handcrafted Furniture in Chicago. The purple heart drawer pull is set in a beveled, notched-hole allowing for easy access of two fingers to open and close.

This original design was intended to compliment her bed's design aesthetic (a copy from a Thos. Moser design “American Bungalow Bed) as well as a few purple heart dovetail shelves in her room. The two contrasting woods look surprisingly nice together (despite my initial hesitation) and pull in other elements of her room. Ultimately, the purple heart will mellow-out a over time, becoming a little more subdued. I only hope my 8 year old is able to do the same. ;)

On to my next project…

well done. I like the drawer handles. I made a piece myself with that detail and it is a great touch. Super

Don’t worry…. she’ll mellow out when she hits her 30s. I did ;)

It’s a beautiful piece.

Excellent workmanship and finish. That’s a really nice looking nightstand!
